What is a power distribution unit (PDU)?
A power distribution unit (PDU) is an electrical device designed to distribute power across different components, typically used within an IT or data centre. A PDU will manage and control the flow of electricity to servers, networking devices, and other hardware.
A PDU can also offer surge protection, remote monitoring, and control capabilities. There are different levels of intelligence available inside the modern PDUs:
-
Basic: No remote access, typically onboard circuit protection only.
-
Metered: No remote access, typically an onboard LCD or LED display showing various power metrics.
-
Monitored: Remote access to power usage across the PDU, individual branches, or individual outlets.
-
Switched: Remote access to power cycle individual outlets. May have monitoring as well.
Each level offers different features, from simple power distribution to advanced data monitoring and remote control functionalities.
Installation of a PDU
Installation of a PDU should always be conducted by a qualified professional to ensure that the load connected does not exceed the configuration of the PDU, or the upstream protection. It involves mounting the PDU in a rack or other suitable location, connecting devices to the PDU, connecting the PDU to a power source, and finally activating the PDU, Branch or individual outlets with the appropriate timings.
What is a 3-phase PDU?
A 3-phase PDU allows you to use 3-phase outlets/supply available in a commercial or industrial facility to distribute your equipment loading across three separate phases, increasing the capacity and efficiency of power distribution, especially suitable for high-power-density racks in data centres.
What is the difference between 1-phase and 3-phase PDU?
The primary difference lies in the amount of power available for distribution. A single-phase PDU distributes power through one phase, suitable for lighter loads, and connecting to more common GPOs or smaller UPSs. In contrast, a 3-phase PDU uses commercial or industrial outlets to distribute equipment loading across all three phases, powering more devices more efficiently.
